Our ECM Division Manager started work in the ECM market in the 1990’s - when it was first known as EDMS (Electronic Document Management Systems) where most systems worked as stand-alone technologies.
As the market matured, the leading EDMS providers started to produce multiple systems as single packaged "suites” which required little or no functional integration. In approximately 2001, the industry began to use the term "Enterprise Content Management" to refer to these integrated solutions.
As the ECM market gathered pace, various acquisitions took place: EMC acquired Documentum, IBM acquired Filenet and Oracle acquired Stellent. This coupled with the introduction of open source technology and new products such as Alfresco, Nuxeo and Liferay, has seen the ECM market evolve rapidly.
As such, global ERP vendors now include ECM solutions as part of their core product suites, with SAP offering both Livelink and Documentum to their customers.
